MUMBAI, MARCH 3, 2009: On March 1, 2009, 45 Salesian Cooperators from all over Mumbai made their trip to Shelter Don Bosco, Mote Vengaon, Karjat for their outreach programme.

They were welcomed by Fr. Xavier Devdas, Fr. Damien Sladen and the boys. Fr. Devdas explained to the Cooperators the activities of the Shelter, telling them that the boys learn not only technical skills but receive all-round education. They live in groups called ‘families’, where they learn to plan their budget, keep to a strict time table and look after each other. In their interaction with the cooperators, the boys shared their experiences of living in the Shelter as well as their plans for the future.

The Cooperators learned that the distinctive feature of the Shelter at Karjat is its eco-friendly set up. The boys are taught to reuse and conserve resources, while all the waste generated from the campus is recycled and used to produce cooking gas, handmade cards and other useful products. The centre is also experimenting with different methods of planting and growing trees.

After this interaction, the Eucharist was celebrated by Fr. Elias Diaz, Fr. Xavier and Fr. Damien. The cooperators then shared lunch with the boys, played games with them and visited the farm. Finally, after thanking the staff and the boys for their hospitality, the cooperators left with an assurance to visit again soon.
