BIS #1943 PARENTS - WE LOVE YOU

Louella Braganza
VIRAR, JULY 30, 2010: On July 25, 2010, we the parishioners of Resurrection parish took the opportunity to express our deep gratitude and sincere appreciation to our parents on the occasion of the feast of Sts. Joaquim and Anne.

The celebration began with a solemn Eucharist at 6.30 pm. The catechism students of STD VII staged a play through which they expressed their love for their parents. In the homily, the parish priest exhorted the parents to offer right orientation to their children. He concluded by saying that the children belonged to God and not to the parents, and the parents have a big responsibility in front of God the way they bring up their children. After the final blessing, roses which is a symbol of Love, was given by each child to their respective parents.

After the Eucharist, a well prepared programme was staged by the children in the church hall. The catechism teachers had taken a lot of trouble in preparing the children. Each class thanked and praised God for the gift of parents and grandparents through their items. It was indeed breathtaking to see the children perform the items with much grace. All in all, the parents got their feet tapping and they left the hall with great joy in their hearts.

BIS #1942 "THEIR'S FIRST, OUR'S CAN WAIT..."

Julianna Nair
BORIVLI, JULY 30, 2010: The title is representative of the attitude of parents all over the world. It simply means that they want their children’s wishes to be fulfilled first because their own wishes can wait. In order to show their gratitude for this selfless behavior and unconditional love of their parents the Sunday School Children along with their teachers and the youth of the parish put up a small felicitation program on July 25, 2010.
The evening began by seeking God’s blessings with the celebration of the Eucharist. Our Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Ronald Menezes during his homily gave special guidelines not only to parents but also to the children. After the Eucharist the parents were led to the hall where the felicitation program began. It was there that the children irrespective of their ages performed and show- cased their talents in singing, dancing as well as acting… all this just to give their mummies and daddies a small surprise and to let them know that they were SPECIAL.
The day ended with the children giving Big Hugs to their parents and wishing them “HAPPY PARENTS DAY”. Everyone went home contended, happy and most of all the parents as well as the children remembered to take home one piece of advice...... FAMILY FIRST..

BIS #1932 MARY OUR WAVING FLAG OF FAITH

Crescens Lemos sdb
LONAVALA, JULY 20, 2010: The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel initiated the community of Don Bosco Lonavala into the Marian Month for the year 2010.
The day began with a solemn Eucharist celebrated by Fr. Lorenzo D’souza the principal of Don Bosco Lonavala. In the evening was the long awaited inauguration. The inauguration began with the teams coming in procession singing hymns to Our Blessed Mother and gathering at the main staircase near the entrance.
The Rector Rev. Fr. Cletus D’souza solemnly cut the ribbon and declared the Marian Month for the year 2010 open. He wished the Aspirants and the Apostolic Boys a month of fun and frolic and at the same time getting to know more about our Blessed Mother and loving her as our own mother. He also wished the aspirants of STD XII all the very best as they help the community to come closer to our Blessed Mother through various activities during this month. Felix Almeida one of the aspirants shed some light on the feast of the day and Praveen Minj explained to us the meaning behind the theme chosen.
During the homily he shared that throughout history there has always existed a relationship between God and man. God has always been faithful to humankind but human beings, weak as we are have often gone astray from God and thus weakening our Faith. During such times when all seems to be lost it is Mary who through her apparitions kept alive the hope of Faith. She appeared at Lourdes, Fatima, Knock and many other places just to keep the flag of Faith waiving high; thus the theme ‘Mary the Waving Flag of Faith’.
May this Marian month help us to appreciate the beautiful gift Jesus left us with; His Mother.

Cl. Bosco Carvalho, sdb
DIVYADAAN, JULY 19, 2010: On July 16, 2010, the third year students of philosophy from Divyadaan - Salesian Institute of Philosophy - Nashik, made a visit to the production plant of the Mahindra and Mahindra Company at Satpur, Nashik. This visit was part of their course that they were doing on industrial sociology. The visit was well guided and planned by Miss Asha Sabarwal of the Employee care and Administration section, Automotive Sector, Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd.
The tour began with a power point informative presentation on the company’s history, its development across the globe, the car models in vogue and the achievements of the company till date. The students were then led to different workshops where the Mahindra models of Logan, Xylo and Scorpio were being manufactured. Each of the three workshops was huge with the latest hi-tech equipments and there were even imported Japanese robots that processed the body of the vehicles. The machines were also handled efficiently by competent employees. This blending of human being and machine power gave a finesse to the automobiles that was astonishing. The engineering supervisors at different workshops gave lucid explanations on the complex process of the birth of a vehicle, and the actual assembling of a car which the students witnessed with their own eyes complemented this information. The accommodation and functioning of heavy machinery was exceptional and reflected the mind of a genius organization.
The relationship between the company and workers was made known by the various schemes offered for the benefit of the employees. The products of Mahindra that have spiraled upward are an outcome of this professional relationship.

The students dived into the discipline of the industry and made an enriching experience of it. A keen interest was seen by the fact that the students posed queries, clarified many a doubt and gathered a lot of good information. This academic visit was certainly made possible by our lecturer and our principal who gave the students an impetus to enter into the world of industries, become aware of the technology involved and broadly analyse its role in moulding society.

BIS #1929 TEACHING TO FISH - A COMMUNITY CARE CENTRE PROJECT

Francis D’souza
VIRAR, JULY 19, 2010: The Society of St Vincent De Paul serves the poor by providing food grain, school fees and medicines. Some SVP members felt that this approach makes the people dependent. This gave birth to a new idea – teach the people to fish.

On Sunday, July 18 Fr. Anthony Santarita, the rector of Bosco Boys Home came to enlighten and guide the members of the SVP and the community Care Centre (CCC) in this regard. The CCC has taken up the project of assisting the SVP in teaching the poor to fish. They have chalked out a plan of helping the poor families to acquire a job through placements. Those who lack skills will be given training so that they too can stand on their own feet. After a brief discussion with Fr. Anthony, the group narrowed down on some courses which will help the poor to acquire a job – home nursing, hospitality, beauticians, electrical and tailoring.
The CCC has thirteen members and all of them are very enthusiastic. They are keen to help every poor family to gain self-respect by making them stand on their own feet rather than stretching their hands for help.

BIS #1928 "GIVE US TODAY OUR DAILY BREAD"- NOT MERELY A WISH

Cl. Justus Mendis sdb
NARUKOT, JULY 17, 2010: The Salesians of Don Bosco Narukot are continually striving in making this prayer into a reality for the village youth, especially for those who see this verse of the prayer just merely ‘a wish’ because of lack of qualification for their employment.

On July 10, Forty-seven boys from about eight villages of the age group eighteen to thirty were helped to get employment in the export oriented company by the Don Bosco technical institute of Narukot.
Mr. Arvind Nopany, the managing director and Mr. Joseph Francis, the Executive director and CEO of the company named RISHI FIBC Solutions Pvt. Ltd, export oriented undertaking, has employed these drop-outs and unemployed youth after a brief interview with them. The company is engaged in making huge bags containing three to ten tones of grains. These bags are exported to around fifty countries of Europe and other Asian countries. They promise to train these youth for three months giving them Rs.2500 styphen and free lodging. Once these youths are trained they will be employed for Rs.150 per day. There is also a hope for the increase of salary according to their performance. Such attempts of varied types are been taken by the institute to ensure the youth from the interior villages to get employment and start earning for their livelihood. Mr. Ashwin Baria, Kirtan Rathwa, Paresh Ganawa and Yesudas Macwan, the members of the development office, under the leadership of Fr. Stanny Ferreira have been responsible for animating the vagarant youth.

On July 12, the same company officials visited the Don Bosco institute to choose technical boys as per Wielding, Fabrications and Fitter trades. Their eye witnessing of the Salesian work for poor and abandoned youth made a deep impact on them which had brought them to the institute to give employment to the well-trained students, by having campus interviews.

Its not the case only with this particular company but also with the other companies like MOFLEX based in Halol, DINDAYAL in Kalol, SODEXO in Baroda, INSIPORON ENGINEERING INSTITUTE based in Ahmedabad, LEAR in Halol, KEMROCKS in Halol, Munjal Auto in Baroda and EURO in Kach, and many others who are engaged in taking campus interviews in our institute in giving employment. The institute is largely grateful to Mr. Pathankar, the benefactor of the institute, in many ways, who gets a lot of companies to come in contact with the Don Bosco Technical Institute of Narukot.

The boys who passed out earlier also have got similar jobs and the ones studying currently are also looking forward to their affiliated jobs. The principal Bro. Damodar is very pleased with the results of the ex-students given by the company officials. The introduction of the new courses of Argon and Meg wielding has also raised a high demand for the admissions. The institute is further looking for the making of our Lord’s Prayer into reality.

Students who topped the charts were:

2. Rathwa Rangla Diwadiya 84.00%
3. Parmar Heena Arvind 77.08%

The students could achieve this because of the dedicated service of fathers, brothers, teachers and various other volunteers who have played an important role to get the students to the ladder of success. These students come from very interior villages where no proper facilities are available. Results of such kind then become an example for all those who have and who don’t have environmental or institutional facilities for education.
The students had extra classes right from the summer, Diwali and Christmas vacations taken by some teachers from various places. The school teachers took special classes even on Sundays. Three meetings taken during the year for the parents helped tremendously in the co-operation of the parents too. After such hardwork, the staff and students of Don Bosco School found themselves extremely joyful looking at the result.

They thanked God for His blessings and prayed to Don Bosco for the strength to follow his ways. The effect of these successful results in the Panchamahl district has rendered numerous admissions to the Don Bosco School for its excellent teaching methods. At the end, the Rector, Fr. Stanny Ferreira and the Principal, Fr. Jerome John thanked the staff for their dedicated service in fostering lives in young souls. Viva Don Bosco!!!

BIS #1924 PRAYING FOR RAINS

BIS Correspondent
RAJASTHAN, JULY 15, 2010: The people of Mikhelpura (Salawad Khurd – Suket) took to the fields and streets of the Salawad village in a ‘jhalsa’ (procession) praying for rains on July 14, 2010.

While some of the neighboring states of North India are flooded with rains, there are places in Rajasthan where the land is still parched and the wells are running dry. The parishioners of St. Michael’s Parish – Salawad (Suket) organized a two hour prayerful procession walking through the fields of the poor farmers pleading with God to send down rains. Ninety- Five Per Cent of the people living in the region are farmers and hence when there are no signs of the arrival of rain, the faces do tell an anxious and often a worried story. Children, women and men, young and old joined in the march through the fields and the village chanting the beads of the rosary and singing hymns to Our Lady and the Risen Lord to hear their humble cry.

The Indian economy is still largely agrarian. Good rains and at appropriate intervals is the need of the hour. Please join us in prayer.

The Homily on ‘Death rather than Sin’ was very touching and meaningful. A saint at the age of 14 and his heroic virtue, the Martyrdom and the holy life of Maria Goretti was an inspirational thought for the students. The entrance dance by Jr. College and choir added gist to the holy Eucharist.

After devotion it was time for duty. The Secondary section gathered in the School Hall to attend the Investiture ceremony of the leaders for year 2010-11.

Fr. Rector in his words after the leader’s oath asked the leaders to follow the footsteps of St. Dominic Savio.

The entire institution received snacks from the management. Children enjoyed the treat. The afternoon class wise games were conducted. There was excitement, fun and frolic. The school concluded an hour early. Thanks to the Management for the snacks.

BIS #1913 SHARE THE LIGHT: COMMISSIONING CATECHISTS

Bro. Velasli and Smita Salve
NASHIK, JULY 7, 2010: On June 27 and July 4 the Catechism Teachers of Don Bosco Parish, Nashik and Dominic Savio Church, Satpur were commissioned and the Catechism classes began for the year 2010-11. The theme for the commissioning was “Share the Light of Christ”. In both the Churches the commissioning consisted of the Holy Eucharist during which at post-communion time the Parish Priest, Fr. Nelson Falcao asked a few questions to the Catechists asking about their availability, generosity, readiness and willingness to teach the Catechism of the Church and to share the Light of Christ. The Catechists responded in unison their readiness to serve the Lord through the work of Catechesis.

Earlier on June 20 all the Catechists about twenty-five of them (Brothers, Sisters and Lay People), attended a Catechetical Seminar conducted by the Pastoral Centre, Bandra, Mumbai, held at St. Anne’s Cathedral Church, Nashik. Fr. Terrence Murray, the Director of the Pastoral Centre, Bandra, and his team did a wonderful job in trying to convince the Catechists that it is not enough to teach prayers to the children but along with that to creatively present various Biblical, Sacramental, Liturgical, Christological, Ecclesial, Pneumatological and Marian themes also.

The Parish, this year has taken seriously the catechesis. The Parish Pastoral Councils on both sides of the Parish are serious about the Catechetical Mandate. The Parish Priest is trying to get involved as many lay people as possible in this ministry of Catechetical teaching. Fr. Nelson’s foresight is that in the context of religious vocational crisis of the present and the future, it is better to anticipate and get ready our lay teachers and lay leaders in the Church.

GUJARAT, JULY 7, 2010: July 6 marks not just the Feast of Dominic Savio but a day when our little leaders pledge to lead their charges to a brighter future.
Lead India is not just the national campaign for the TOI but a pledge taken by twenty-five strong and determined boys and girls who were chosen and nominated by their very own students. The theme chosen for this year is The Human Rights campaign by the Central Govt. For the Indian masses to lead their fellow students to fight for and be aware of their rights, Hence the four house teams were named according to their rights, Right to Education, Right to Live, Right to Food and Forest Rights.

The young leaders were given this responsibility by taking their pledges on this very special day of the Feast of Dominic Savio who was a leader of his time. May our captains and leaders who emerge from our boarding’s and schools learn what it means to be leaders in The Spirit of Dominic Savio.
