REJUVENATING SALESIAN YOUTH MOVEMENT (SYM) AT BOSCOWADI

SYM Correspondent

MUMBAI, AUGUST 16, 2012 :  On August 15, the Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) took another leap forward when eighty five youth gathered at Boscowadi for a day of Spiritual Renewal, Togetherness, Group Building and Strengthening the bonds between the various Parish youth groups of Salesian Mumbai. The Theme for the day was ‘Water for Life’ in keeping with the fun that surrounded the ‘Monsoon Madness’.

The day began with a ‘Praise and Worship’ moment followed by the Eucharistic Celebration. Fr. Osborn Furtado, Vocation Promoter for the Province, was the main celebrant. During the homily, Fr. Glenford Lowe, Director of DBYS, took the youth through a reflective moment on the ‘River Me’ journey of life.   “Connecting the dots of one’s life, when compared to the river flow, was an occasion for deep soul searching for me,” remarked a reflective youth. Three saplings, representing the SYM were brought forward for the Offertory Procession.  Colourful Salesian Youth Movement Banners decorated the venue.

After a sumptuous lunch, the youth were divided into four teams, named after the Rivers: Nile, Jordan, Tigris and Euphrates.  A novel ice-breaker set the ball rolling.  Four colour ribbons were used, Red for Courage, Blue for Striving, Yellow for Sunshine and Green for life.  Depending on the colour of one’s ribbon, the youth had to introduce themselves as: “Hello, I am Red ........, and I am ready to die for ........”, or “Hello, I am Blue ......, and I am ready to strive for ........”, or “Hello, I am Yellow ........., and I am ready to smile for.....”, and finally, “I am Green ........., and I am ready to live for .......”.  The teams were asked to prepare a Slogan, a Jingle and an ‘Ad’ for their respective Rivers.

With the Olympics just over, SYM organised its very own SYMPICS!   The competitions now moved to ‘Cool in the Pool’.   ‘Pearl Diving’ was the first Team event that set the hunt for the gold.  Hundred marbles scattered in the pool had to be gathered up in two minutes.   ‘Water Tug-of-War’ was the second event.   A real show of strength for all.  Free games followed on, football on the shores of Boscowadi, Volley ball and light music to keep the jiving feet on their toes.

The day ended with a call to build the SYM in the local parishes, institutions and youth campers associated with DBYS.  All eyes are now on the ‘Eco Spirituality’ camp to be held at Karjat on September 8-9, 2012, and the ‘Social Commitment for Peace’ to be held at DB Matunga on September 30, 2012.

Congratulations to all the Organizers for the creative way of celebrating ‘Independence Day’.  One could feel a new sense of ‘freedom’ in the hearts and minds of the young SYM.
