DYNAMIC SALESIAN FR. RONALD MENEZES PASSES AWAY

Fr. Glenford Lowe sdb

MATUNGA, SEPTEMBER 6, 2012: The Salesians of the Mumbai Province sadly announce the sudden demise on September 5, 2012 of Rev. Fr. Ronald Menezes sdb, former Rector of Don Bosco High School, Borivili. Fr. Ronnie Menezes, aged 57, a dynamic Salesian was recently transferred to his new post as Administrator and Assistant Parish Priest at St. Dominic Savio’s Church, Antop Hill.  Fr. Ronnie had gone for an afternoon rest and passed away quietly. By evening he was no more.

Born on October 15, 1955, in Bandra, Mumbai.  He spent his childhood in Parel and studied in Don Bosco High School, Matunga before joining the Apostolic School at Lonavla.  Fr. Ronnie joined the Novitiate at Yercaud and made his first profession on May 24, 1974. On completing his Philosophical studies at Yercaud, Fr. Ronnie moved to Don Bosco Koregaon Park – Pune to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Science (Maths). As a young Salesian, he moved on to Don Bosco Borivili and Don Bosco Lonavla for his Practical Training. He did his Theological Studies at Kristu Jyoti College, Bangalore (1981-1985) and was ordained priest at the Shrine of Don Bosco’s Madonna, Matunga on December 22, 1984.

His first assignment as Priest was as Dean at the Divyadaan – the Salesian Philosophate at Nashik (1985-88) to nurture the young salesians in formation. The next nine years were glorious years when he moved to Don Bosco, Lonavla. “As Rector of Don Bosco Lonavala (1991-97), Fr. Ronnie was known for his dynamism, creativity, multi-faceted personality and discipline. He took Lonavla to higher standards”, remarked a young Salesian. He spent the next three years at the Gregorian University, Rome pursuing a Masters degree in Sacred Scripture. The next twelve years saw Fr. Ronnie as a mature and responsible rector of the communities of Don Bosco Matunga and Don Bosco Borivili. On his completion as Rector in Borivili, he barely spent a month at his new assignment at St. Dominic Savio Church, Antop Hill. Fr. Ronnie was formerly a member of the Provincial Council and headed the Commission for Social Communication.

“His coming to our Parish was a ray of hope for all of us. In a short span, he captured our hearts as he broke the Word of God to us and took the time to visit our homes. The Youth found in him a passionate friend who would help them grow... but now, we are in darkness once again”, cried an inconsolable parish member. The news of his sudden death was received with shock. Numerous Salesians and parishioners thronged to the Church to pay their respects and to pray with the bereaved members of his family.

Death has no favourites. But one of our favourite ones has been picked for Eternity. May his soul rest in Peace.

His funeral has been scheduled for Friday, September 7, 2012 at 4:00pm at the Shrine of Don Bosco’s Madonna, Matunga.

Fr. Ronnie. May your soul rest in peace. You touched our hearts in a short span of time. God once again proves that he takes those he loves the most. Surely God loved you much more than all of us. We are all going to miss you dearly.

In the 35 years I have been around, I have met Fr. Ronnie, TWICE- and to say that he has had a most profound influence on me is a gross understatement. I vividly remember the days my family and I spend with him during his two visits to Chicago. Fr. Ronnie had an extraordinary affect on people. His tone of voice, his hand gestures, his heart-warming smile as he spoke to you, made you feel like you are the most important person in the world. We were blessed on both his visits to participate in mass he held at our homes. I sincerely believe his homilies were inspired directly by the holy spirit (If I may say so). When he spoke to us he had that magical and special way to connect with us. Every homily he shared with us was relevant and thought-provoking. At a time when I was questioning my faith and asked Fr Ronnie for some answers to my questions, all he said to me was “ I’m sorry, I don’t know. I do not have the answers” .He was not that dogmatic priest who said that I would burn in hell for questioning my faith. He allowed me to embark on my journey to discover it and embrace it, when I find it.

Father Ronnie was a prince of a man, a man’s man and a priest’s priest . Time will pass and memories will fade, but everyone has those few impressions and a few stories that will always reverberate in their minds. For me, that will be Fr Ronnie and the memories of his 2 visits to Chicago that will always be timeless and never forgotten.

Fr Ronnie. We had the privilege of being part of your very first Parish at Nashik. We at HAL Ozar Nasik became a part of you and have never forgotten the love, affection and salesian spirit that you instilled in all of us. I shall miss you terribly and nothing will be able to fill that void. You are indeed one of a kind. You were taken before your time, I guess he knows why, since I certainly don't.

Father Ronnie, We looked forward to Sundays at Ozar Township, Nasik to hear the short stories during the sermon that passed the gospel to us kids in a digestable form. People who did not like confession began to have confessions because it meant you will have a renewal one way or another. He was an inspiration and motivational speaker with smile like none other.
God has taken away what he so beautifully built and shaped. I am sure, he has a bigger assignment now. Thank you for giving us spiritual meaning of life.

One of the best priest the parish of St.Pius X Mulund has ever met and experienced. He was the man of the youth of St.Pius X parish Mulund in the mid 80's. The summer camps and the musical hit "The Prodigal Son" that he directed and choreographed will go down memory lane in a long way. We will always MISS YOU dearly Fr.Ronnie. May Eternal rest grant unto you and let perpetual light shine on you. Amen. Continuing interceding for the youth of this world. Love u Fr. Ronnie. Joaquim Fernandes.
