DON BOSCO PARISH BARODA CELEBRATES ITS 40 BIRTHDAY

BARODA, SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 :  On September 14, 1972, a new parish was carved out of Rosary Parish, Baroda. It was named Divine Child parish, but soon after the Salesians took over, it was renamed after Don Bosco.

Well, this parish has now completed 40 years. On Sunday, September 16 , this event was celebrated with a special multi-lingual, multi-media program of devotional music, presented by the parish youth before an enthralled audience of seven hundred persons that filled the church. Bishop Godfrey de Rozario graced the occasion with his presence.

The twenty six member polyphonic choir was trained by Joy Fernandes (who has retained his Salesian spirit to the hilt). They rendered such popular hymns as Amazing Grace, Be Exalted, In His Time and Teri Aradhana. The climax was Handel’s Alleluia Chorus. The audience joined in the singing wherever they could, as the words were flashed on a screen through an LCD projector. As part of the program, the senior girls of Auxilium Convent presented a superb ‘hand mime’ to the strains of Shout to the Lord in the surreal ambient of ultraviolet lighting.

Another number that stole the hearts of the audience was the children’s rendition of Peter Gonsalves’  Power to the Children, with little Diana Castelino as the soloist for the verses. The youth also presented a very creative mime on the theme of community building. For the Gujarati section of the audience there was a sequence from the life of Don Bosco done through slides, skits and solo singing. It was amazing to watch Johny Mathew (a Malayali youth) singing Don Bosco’s part in Gujarati!

The program ended with a spirited rendition of our parish anthem, Love Jesus, Live Jesus (composed by the present parish priest himself) in four voices by the youth choir, but with the entire congregation joining in the singing. After the program, there was time for some light-hearted fellowship in the church courtyard, as the people enjoyed a tasty ‘prasad’ that some of our parishioners jointly sponsored. The people were full of praises for the event. “We have never had anything like this before,” they said.
