DON BOSCO ALIRAJPUR GOES THE BIOGAS WAY!

ALIRAJPUR-MADHYAPRADESH, APRIL 02, 2013:  The community of Don Bosco Alirajpur, in its efforts to implement various eco-friendly projects on campus now boasts of two bio-gas plants which supply sufficient fuel to power the kitchens of the institution.

The bio-gas plants were basically the brain child of Fr. Dominic Martis, the then administrator of this                   institution who foresaw the fruits of this initiative much before its construction. However due to certain miscalculations and technical glitches, the project experienced a landslide and hope seemed lost.

A couple of months ago, Bro.  Melvyn Carvalho, the Technical in-charge, analyzed the situation and using his technical knowledge coupled with his never-say-die attitude and a strong backing of his technical students decided to make a few alterations to the constructed gas plants. It was indeed a herculean task and required grit and determination. At various occasions they experienced bitter –sweet success.

Just when things seemed normal other problems would crop up. But the boys along with their dexterous instructor were ready to make sacrifices to see this project reach a successful completion. A few days ago after all the ups and downs, the bio-gas plants started functioning normally and it was blessed by Fr. Leslie Pereira, the Rector of this institution.

One plant functions on cow-dung and the other plant has been constructed close to the boarding section and is fuelled by sewage water and human waste. Both these plants give a daily gas output of about 3-4 hours each which is sufficient to prepare two meals for the people on campus. In the long run they hope to slowly eliminate the use of LPG and wood to run their kitchens.

Bro. Melvyn who co-ordinates the development works in the villages is already spearheading the biogas project in different villages with much success to his credit.

Way to go! Fr. Dominic and Bro. Melvyn for your foresight and efforts and Kudos!  to the community of Alirajpur.
