PUNE, MAR 1, 2018: Four hundred students from Don Bosco High School in Pune participated in a class-wise science project competition cum exhibition to mark national Science Day, in honour of Noble Laureate Professor C V Raman on February 28.

The event began on February 21, with students of standard five dressed as scientists reciting their autobiographies. On February 22, students of standard six crowned themselves as various elements of Mendeleev's periodic table and explained the properties of the elements. The budding scientists developed a solar cap, homemade sound box, hydraulic bridge and layered agriculture system in the course of the week.

Students of standard seven, eight and nine exhibited self-invented working models on the February 23, 26 and 27 respectively. On the final day, February 28, there were charts and rangoli displays highlighting the issue of global warming.

The students assembled in the school hall for the formal celebration of Science day. Students of standard nine presented a humorous skit that had serious lessons to be learnt on superstitions. After the skit and the speech on the importance of Science day, the winners of the science projects were awarded certificates.

"Teacher Lucia is my favourite science teacher. She makes science a wonderful experience for me.  I loved helping her throughout the week.  She used to be in school for long hours planning for the day and me and my friends were very happy helping her," Kevin, a students from standard nine, said.

"When this idea of Science week was put forth by Father Bosco, we were really nervous but after seeing the results of our students' efforts and the joy of their achievements, I feel it was worth putting this effort," Lucia Gaikwad, who heads the science faculty, said.

The programme ended with a speech by the Principal, Father Bosco D'Mello, the mastermind behind the event.  He appreciated the effort of the students and the science faculty in organising the event.
